Student Visas (F-1 / J-1)

F-1 and J-1 guidance — including OPT, STEM extensions, status compliance, and planning for life after graduation.

Studying in the United States is a significant opportunity, and U.S. student visa rules are more detailed than many applicants expect. Maintaining status, understanding work authorization, and planning for life after graduation all have immigration implications worth understanding clearly before problems arise.

THE F-1 STUDENT VISA

The F-1 visa is the standard visa for international students enrolled in academic programs at accredited U.S. institutions. F-1 students must maintain full-time enrollment and comply with the terms of their status throughout their stay. Changing programs, transferring schools, taking a leave of absence, or dropping below full-time enrollment all have immigration implications that must be handled carefully.

THE J-1 EXCHANGE VISITOR VISA

The J-1 visa covers a wide range of exchange visitor programs. Some J-1 holders are subject to a two-year home residency requirement that must be addressed before they can change to certain other visa categories or apply for a green card.

WORK AUTHORIZATION FOR F-1 STUDENTS

On-campus employment is permitted up to 20 hours per week during the academic year. Curricular Practical Training allows off-campus work that is an integral part of the curriculum. Optional Practical Training allows up to 12 months of work authorization after completing a degree, extended to 36 months for STEM degree holders who receive a STEM OPT extension.

PLANNING BEYOND YOUR STUDIES

For many international students, the F-1 visa is just the beginning of a longer immigration journey. Starting that conversation early — about OPT, H-1B sponsorship, entrepreneurship, or other pathways — makes a real difference.
